Using the learning emphases in the lower primary school

Choosing, for example, the learning emphasis: 'Understanding contributions made by the peoples of Asia to the world', the Studies of Asia Curriculum Support Document provides a set of suggestions like those in the table below. (Note that this table is adapted from the original, to make more reference to China rather than other Asian countries.)

These suggestions are student activities which would, in practice, be part of larger learning sequences. They cover a range of areas of the curriculum.

Food List the foods of Chinese origin eaten in Australian homes. Plan and prepare a simple Chinese meal. Write a class 'Big Cookbook' of Chinese recipes used by students' families.
Stories from Asia Make finger puppets to be used in a traditional Chinese folk-tale. Perform a short drama based on a folk-tale from China. Compare an Aboriginal story of the dreamtime with a Chinese folk-tale.
Identify simple attributes of a Chinese dragon. Create a model of a Chinese dragon. Re-tell a section of the 'Monkey' story from the point of view of the character Pigsy.
Water Describe modes of transport in Hong Kong harbour. Make a model of Hong Kong harbour. Use a map to identify major ports on the Yangtze River.
Place Explain why shoes are removed at the doors of houses in some parts of China. Describe the natural resources used for building homes in Yunan Province, China. Identify important cities in China.
