Using the learning emphases in the upper primary school

Choosing, for example, the learning emphasis: 'Considering the likely implications of closer Asia-Australia relationships', the Studies of Asia Curriculum Support Document provides a set of suggestions like those in the table below. (Note that this table is adapted from the original, to make more reference to China rather than other Asian countries.)

These suggestions are student activities which would, in practice, be part of larger learning sequences. They cover a range of areas of the curriculum.

Place

Identify vegetables of Chinese origin in local vegetable gardens or shops.

Draw a streetscape of an Australian shopping centre which includes shops owned by Chinese-Australians.

Describe the impact of an Australian aid program in China.

Transport and travel

Write the top ten travel words or phrases required by Australians for travel in China.

Use role play to demonstrate socially acceptable gestures for Australians travelling to China.

Create text and pictures for an advertisement in a Chinese newspaper about an Australian capital city.

Community

List various cultural groups of Chinese origin within the local community.

Interview community members who came to Australia from China.

Use drama to explore the experiences of people who have come to Australia from China.

Trade

Identify commodities exported from Australia to China.

List the names of Chinese companies operating in Australia and Australian companies operating in China.

Discuss advantages for Australia arising from increased trade with China.

Communication

Create an interactive postcard to be sent to children in China.

List the impacts of a week-long breakdown of communication channels between China and Australia.

Design and create an electronic brochure about links between an Australian city and Shanghai.
