Using the learning emphases in the middle secondary school: Studies of society and environment

Choosing, for example, the learning emphasis: 'Being informed about contemporary issues', the Studies of Asia Curriculum Support Document provides a set of suggestions like those in the table below. (Note that this table is adapted from the original, to make more reference to China rather than other Asian countries.)

These suggestions are student activities which would, in practice, be part of larger learning sequences.

Environmental Issues

Outline the views of various stakeholders about a proposed dam on the Mekhong River.

Identify possible consequences for the natural environment of increased industrialisation in a coastal area of China.

Prepare a strategy plan for the conservation of the giant panda in China.

Work

Outline ways in which work is allocated in a village in China.

Define and discuss issues for the future of rural workers in China.

Explain advantages and disadvantages of the opening of the Chinese economy for workers in the private and public sectors of the economy.

Tourism

Describe a selection of World Heritage sites in China and outline reasons for their inclusion in the World Heritage list.

Suggest positive and negative consequences of increased numbers of foreign tourists on World Heritage sites in China.

Evaluate the effect of foreign tourism on so-called 'minority nationalities' in Yunnan Province, China.

Cities

Outline trends in ownership of motor vehicles in Beijing in the last ten years.

Describe positive and negative effects resulting from increasing numbers of motor vehicles in Beijing.

Predict future changes to Beijing as a result of increasing road traffic.

Citizenship

Describe the role of the 'Young Pioneers' in schools in China.

Discuss reasons for the 'one child policy' in China.

Analyse the extent to which the concept of 'Asian values' is valid.
