Pam Macklin, Curriculum Corporation, presents Mr Wu
with a copy of the Snapshots of Asia kit

Pam Macklin, Curriculum Corporation, presents Mr Wu with a copy of the 'Snapshots of Asia' kitTonight is our last in Mojiang, and tomorrow we'll be leaving many friends. But tonight there are toasts and gifts. There's sadness but no misgivings. Mojiang has been a transitional period between uneasiness and belonging here in China. We can't thank our hosts enough.

But there's more to this splendid and memorable evening. We walk to the school hall for a farewell concert, to be greeted by the opposite of a hushed welcome—the students are as excited as any about to give a performance they've worked on for months.

Cultural diversity is alive and well in Mojiang. Some of the performance pieces are from minority nationalities, some are more 'Chinese'. Sometimes they're in English, sometimes not. Whatever...Pam presents Mr Wu with a copy of the 'Snapshots of Asia' kit we're stunned by the preparation and enthusiasm of the students.

We perform as well, some of us feeling gauche and amateurish, but our versions of karaoke favourites are well received. And we also do a version of 'Dang women tong zai yiqi', taught to us by Jing, who now comes from Canberra but smooths the way for us all through China.

Nobody seems to want it to end but the concert eventually does.
