| Places in Indonesia Upper Primary Unit
Students explore the people, places and customs of the diverse regions of Indonesia, and write a personal response in poetry form about one particular region.

Images of Indonesia
Images of Indonesia Students record the places visited on a blank map of Indonesia. Print out one for each student in the class.
Students choose a favourite photo to share with the class and discuss why they would want to research that region.
Regions of Indonesia Students read the information about Indonesia's seven tourism development regions on:
Indonesia: Tourist Destinations Students complete the questions on the first page of the Places in Indonesia Activity Sheet and share their findings with the class.
Students join with other students wishing to study the same region in greater detail.
A Region of Indonesia: search engine activity Explain to students that they will now be working in small region-based groups. Students navigate their way through the following websites to gather information about their chosen region.
Indonesia Interactive Travel This site offers stimulating and interesting information, such as places of interest, traditional songs that can be played online, a calendar of current events, photos and drawings of traditional costumes and houses from the provinces and special territories of Indonesia.
Indonesia National Parks This site explores the Indonesian National Parks network.
Students complete the activities on the second part of the Places in Indonesia Activity Sheet, 'My Region of Indonesia'.
Region Poem: search engine activity Students use the following web address to search for images of a particular region:
Students key in the names of major islands, large cities and popular tourist destinations, eg Sumatra, Kalimantan, Yogyakarta, Lombok. (Please note: students need to add 'and Indonesia' when searching for Java and Flores.) Students record their responses to the images and information about their region, listing feelings, colours, key words and phrases. These will form the basis of each student's poem.
Students write and illustrate their poems and present them to the class.
