Leading 21st Century Schools: About the project
Principals are embarking on a journey to lead sustainable change within their schools to ensure that their students are not excluded from developing knowledge, skills and understandings about Asia.
Project Aims
The project provides a professional learning component that supports the principal’s capacity to:
- understand the rationale for embedding the studies of Asia into schools' teaching and learning programs and activities
- recognise their own strategic leadership role as essential for effecting transformational change within individual educational settings or at system level
- develop knowledge and understanding of the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools (PDF: 1.4 MB) (MCEETYA 2005) and its implications for schools, teachers and students
- commit to embedding studies of Asia into schools' teaching and learning programs and activities.
Partnerships
The Project is a partnership with the Peak Principal Associations and is managed by State and Territory Coordinating Groups comprised of representatives from Government and Catholic and Independent sectors.
Stages
The Leading 21st Century Schools National Forum in May 2008 launched first part of the professional learning strategy for participating principals. The National Forum engaged school and system leaders with Asia, motivated leaders to lead a change process in their organisations, and resourced leaders to achieve the goals of the National Statement.
Phase 1 in 2008, strategically supports principals to undertake an action-based professional learning program to embed studies of Asia into school curriculum and policy.
Phase 2, in 2009, will provide opportunities for schools to extend and deepen their school-based work commitment through school grants to a selected cohort of principals. The work of these principals will provide good practice models for their peers around the country.
Principals are making presentations to their school communities about the importance of engaging their students with Asia and undertaking audits of school curriculum, resources and staff knowledge regarding studies of Asia.
Resources supporting principals include a Tool Kit offering professional learning modules, audit templates and a range of curriculum resources to provide practical support.
