Getting started

Studies of Asia involves the planned inclusion of content on Asia within any learning area in primary and secondary curriculum. If you are new to the studies of Asia, the following resources provide support to develop studies of Asia programmes.

National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools
This is a national policy statement approved by the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA). The Statement identifies the broad knowledge, understandings, values and skills required to engage with Asia in the context of existing policies and practices in teaching and learning.

Teacher and School Resource - A guide to implementing the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools
This resource builds on the National Statement to provide practical tools and strategies for change. It contains examples of school policies, curriculum plans and auditing tools to support teachers implementing or extending a focus on studies of Asia and Australia. It is designed for school leaders and teachers responsible for initiating change in schools. The Resource is accompanied by a professional learning workshop.

Now more than ever we live in one world
What do schools do when they set about internationalising their curricula and programs with a focus on Asia? The purpose of this publication is to give space to teachers' voices for some description of studies of Asia as they appear in practice in a variety of Australian schools.

Studies of Asia Professional Development Workshop for Teacher Educators
Introduces pre-service teacher educators to the studies of Asia agenda and available curriculum resources and professional development to support them in including Asia related content in their teaching programs and courses.

National Education Agenda: Australia Asia Engagement Update 2005
Introduces school leaders to the rationale for including studies of Asia in the curriculum, provides examples of school practice around the country and identifies the support available to develop and implement programmes.
