STUDENT WORKSHEET
Introduction
The purpose of this activity is to explore issues related to increasing traffic in Bangkok. There is resource material on this topic in A Thai Journey. Four additional pieces of information available on the Internet are explored below.
Tasks
-
Look at statistics on the number of road accidents in
Bangkok on the following website and complete the following tasks.
http://203.144.180.230/Internet/stat_search/stat_02/2002road_accidenteng.html
-
Graph the increase between 1990 and 2001 of the
accidents, fatalities, injuries and costs involved.
Calculate the percentage increase or decrease
for each element over the period.
-
In which elements have there been the greatest
rate of increase or decrease? List some possible
reasons for these increases or decreases.
- Other costs of traffic congestion include economic and health issues.
Read the following article on the economic costs of urban environmental
degradation
http://www.wri.org/wri/wr-96-97/ud_txt6.html and look at the table comparing the costs of traffic congestion
in a number of Asian cities
http://www.wri.org/wri/wr-96-97/tables/1_t5.gif
- Describe the major problems which arise because of traffic congestion.
- Suggest ways in which these problems might be lessened.
-
One of the serious effects of traffic congestion is the negative
effect on air quality. Monitor air quality in Bangkok by recording
