Teaching Ideas
Here are some additional ideas for using these Resource sheets contained in this unit:

Introductory activity
This unit points out that the production of rice is still the key activity of the large majority of Vietnamese people. Students can be asked to look at the statistics provided in Vietnam and Australia at a glance at the front of the book, and to draw on their likely image of Vietnam as a green, rice-producing nation. They can then be asked: What if the rice failed? What might be the implications?

Having considered this basic idea, students will be in a better position to appreciate the importance of restoring the sustainability of damaged land.

Resource sheet 1 How can this land be more productive
The information given in the 'Problems' column on this Resource sheet can be presented by the teacher and a narrative, setting the scene and telling the story of the area, rather than in list form. Student suggestions about possible solutions can be recorded on the board, or individually in workbooks.

The remainder of the unit provides evidence for students to study the plan implemented and to assess its likely success.
