Using the learning emphases in the lower secondary school: the Arts

Choosing, for example, the learning emphasis: 'Developing concepts of Asia', the Studies of Asia Curriculum Support Document provides a set of suggestions like those in the table below. (Note that this table is adapted from the original, to make more reference to China rather than other Asian countries.)

These suggestions are student activities which would, in practice, be part of larger learning sequences.

Styles and influences

Identify elements of a Chinese artwork that are characteristic of the culture in which it was produced.

Develop an exhibition catalogue that illustrates the diversity of a range of artworks from China.

Make an artwork influenced by the style of an artwork from China.

Stories

Select passages from classical or contemporary Chinese music to accompany a segment of a story by a Chinese author.

Construct a dramatic interpretation of a folk story from China.

Make an artwork that illustrates the relationship between characters in a Chinese story.

Images and forms

Use symbols employed by individuals or groups in China to create a design for wrapping paper. (Examples: flags, crests.)

Make an artwork based on interpretation of a symbol from China. (Examples: 'zodiac' animals, religious symbols, temple carvings.)

Paint a portrait in the style of Chinese ancestral portraits.

Values and beliefs

Develop a performance to tell a story from the life of Confucius.

Select appropriate typography and create an illuminated page around a principle of Confucius.

Explain ways in which peasants were represented in Chinese political art after 1949.

Similarities and differences

Experiment with role and characterisation to improvise a dramatic situation about people in China interacting with Australians.

Write an appraisal of a student performance of music from China.

Identify the diversity of themes, content, styles and purposes in dance from regions of China.
