Asia Education Foundation

Who says it should be included?

Strong, authoritative voices say Asia literacy should be part of our school curriculums.

The Melbourne Declaration calls for Asia literacy for every Australian. It acknowledges that major changes in the world are placing new demands on Australian education: ‘India, China and other Asian nations are growing and their influence on the world is increasing. Australians need to become “Asia literate”, engaging and building strong relationships with Asia.

The Australian Secondary Principals Association strongly supports the policy, as does the Australian Primary Principals Association, which believes: ‘Studies of Asia promote the knowledge, understanding and relationships we need to live as a civil, cosmopolitan, democratic nation, on the doorstep of the Asian continent.’

The two peak national parent bodies, the Australian Council for State School Organisations (ACSSO) and the Australian Parents Council agree. For further information refer to page 119 of the ACSSO  policy document (PDF: 820kb).
