Professor Michael Worton

Michael Worton graduated with an MA (Hons) in French with German from Edinburgh in 1973, and obtained his PhD also from Edinburgh University for a thesis on ‘The evolution of the poetry of Ren Char: 1928–45’.

His first appointment was as Lecturer in French at Liverpool University (January 1976 – September 1980). He was appointed to a Lecturership in French at UCL in 1980, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1990, and to a Personal Chair in 1994. He was appointed Fielden Professor of French Language and Literature in 1998, succeeding Professor Annette Lavers.

From 1994–98, he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, and in May 1998, he was made a Vice-Provost. In September 1998, he assumed responsibility for Teaching and Learning. From 1999, he also assumed responsibility for overseeing the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty of Social and Historical Sciences, the Faculty of Laws, the School of Slavonic and East European Studies and the School of Public Policy. From 2004 he assumed responsibility for developing and implementing UCL’s International Strategy.

In broad terms, his research focuses on 20th-century literature and on aspects of critical theory, feminism, gender politics and painting and contemporary photography. He has published widely, notably on the work of Michel Tournier, contemporary French literature and theories of textuality.
