How schools can, and do, respond

This text provides authentic examples of studies of Asia and internationalised curriculum – how it looks in practice in a school or classroom. The case studies show schools at different stages in the development of whole-school approaches to integrating studies of Asia in curriculum policy.

Varieties of implementation: For discussion

  • ‘A journey begins with one step’ – a saying from an Asian source. What single step might begin your professional journey with relation to studies of Asia?
  • We try to address international or global issues in all the units we teach. ‘ I think you could say, reliably, that you’d find a breadth of perspectives in every student’s learning’. Could you say that about what the students learn at your school?
  • What, if any, are the impediments to including Asian perspectives and examples in the topics you teach? What steps could you take to resolve them?
  • Where have the people in these case studies sought support from for their efforts? You might like to consider what role your parents and other community members might play in this process.
  • What relatively simple and cheap opportunities are there for the development of mutually beneficial cultural partnerships?
  • ‘We are going to be able to read better and write better if we have more to read and write about’. What’s that about? Is it true?
