Hip hi-tech
Investigations and activities (SOSE Focus)
- Suggest why technology and computer use is so high in work and daily life in Korea.
- View the five pieces of rollover text for Hip hi-tech and make a list of all the different uses for technology in Korean peoples’ lives. Which of these uses are also common in Australia?
- Why do you think that games like StarCraft or WarCraft have become so popular? Write an imaginative piece where you put yourself in the shoes of the two young people in the image playing the game. Describe your thoughts and feelings about the game you are involved in, why you feel this way, your hopes and your fears.
- Look at the Blizzard Entertainment website to explore WarCraft or explore the Lineage site and try the playable demos. Discuss why people find them so exciting. What skills are required to play computer games successfully?
- Visit the Ausgamers website to find out more about Australia’s games community. Explain why some people from different age groups enjoy spending a lot of time on computers and Net games.
- Search the internet and evaluate some of the graphics and designs of existing internet games. You may look at the Blizzard Entertainment website to explore WarCraft or the Lineage site to explore Lineage first. How would you describe the artwork and graphics? What techniques are used to create the images? Notice that many of these game sites have the Korean flag as a clickable link so that Korean people can play in their own language.
- a)Read the article 'South Korea leads the way' on the CNET News site to read about how South Korea leads the world in fast cable internet connection and hi-tech equipment.
a) Write questions for a class survey to find out about computer use among your family and friends. Possible questions could include the use of computers at home, the use of email and the frequency of playing net games.
b) Create a spreadsheet to collate your own findings and another to chart your whole class findings. Then write some statements which summarise your research and draw conclusions about your findings on the use of computers among people who you know.
