Industrial giants

Investigations and activities (History/SOSE Focus)

  1. Look at the various buildings and areas in the image called Industrial Giants, and write a description of what you think they are. Find out more by reading the rollover text.
  2. Visit the Hyundai Car Company website to find out more about it and the cars it produces. Look at the style of the website, the colours used, the images and text? How are Hyundai cars being represented on this site?
  3. Work in teams to design a multimedia advertising promotion for Hyundai cars that might appeal to people in your own city/town and then conduct a comparative survey about the strengths of different promotions.
  4. Look at the information about the Port of Ulsan on the Shin Shin Corporation website and the city of Ulsan on the Wikipedia site. What can you discover about the potential of Ulsan as a major port for worldwide shipping?
  5. Go on a virtual tour of Ulsan on the Shin Shin Corporation website through the Multimedia section on the right hand side of the home page. Record three of your impressions of the city and then share your views with other class members.
  6. Australia has many links to Korea through the industrial areas of Ulsan and Pohang. We export products worth millions of dollars to Korea including coal and iron ore, and import products also worth millions of dollars, including cars, TVs and telecommunications equipment from Korea. Download the Economy Fact Sheet about the Republic of Korea on the DFAT website to see the statistics about these important links. Create a poster showing the imports and exports.
  7. a) Pohang is another example of a city that developed from a rural community in the 1960s to the modern, industrial complex that it is today. Look at the images of Pohang from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and now on the Pohang City website.

     b) Download some images from each decade. Then use the images to create a poster with a pictorial timeline showing the changes that have taken place in Pohang.

    c) Write descriptions of some of the changes in Pohang and how it has developed into such a major industrial area. Alternatively, write an imaginary autobiographical piece remembering and describing some of the changes you have seen in your city between the 1960s and today. Look at the section on Symbols of Pohang which will help you understand the pride the citizens have in their community.

  1. Find Korea in an atlas. Identify the six major industrial cities of Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Gwanju, Incheon and Daejon. Now locate the industrial cities of Ulsan, Pohang, Ansan and Changwon. In a paragraph, describe their locations on the Korean peninsula.
