Investigations and activities (History/SOSE Focus)

  1. Write a description of the outfit in the image Who’s wearing what? Would you or your friends wear this outfit? Why or why not?
  2. Zipia Fashion Network is an online Korean fashion shop. What is fashionable at present? How do these clothes compare with what young people wear in your local community?
  3. What is fashionable and what is not at various times tells you a lot about a society. Collect information from the pop-ups on the screen to create a ‘Timeline of Korean Fashion Trends’. This can be developed either as individual posters or as a group activity where you create a large wall chart with your findings. You could draw sketches of Korean fashion through time. Have a look at the article Making Heavenly Clothing, One Stitch at a Time in the Winter 2005 edition of Koreana as well as the articles in the Autumn 1995 edition of Koreana.
  4. Prepare either a short talk or a visual presentation showing how Korean fashion has been influenced by particular historical events. Go to the Clothing section of the Korea.net website for additional information. Visit the Traditional Clothing section of the Life in Korea website to look at Hanbok clothes.
  5. Find out more about traditional Hanbok in Autumn 1995 edition of Koreana. Write a description of this clothing style for men and women. Then design your own fashion using Hanbok features.
  6. Search the Internet for work by designers such as Icinoo, Andre Kim, Jin Teok, Bakangchi and others. How would you describe their designs? Would you wear them in Australia? Why or why not? You can start your search by reading about Andre Kim in The Chosun Ilbo newspaper.
  7. Discuss this statement: ‘Changes in fashion in Korea mirror trends in other parts of the world’.
