Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia - Teacher Information (Citizenship)
Ideas about and practices of citizenship throughout the Asian region are explored through the materials and activities presented in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The text is illustrated with examples of individuals and groups contributing to their society. Social issues confronting citizens are presented as case studies. The student activities provided in the three activity sheets build upon and complement the published text. The country-specific focus for the activities is on Pakistanand China.

Individuals Make a Difference: Pakistan
This student activity sheet provides a short biography of childrens' rights campaigner Iqbal Masih and his activism about use of child labour in Pakistan. The biography is accompanied by questions and activities.
Website Investigation and Design: China’s One Child Policy
This student activity sheet asks students to explore the background and ongoing impact of China's One Child Policy on its citizens. They then design a website that reflects their research, incorporating features of effective website design.

Note that the implementation of the One Child Policy is a complex issue, that it has changed over time and that there are widely divergent views about the policy so you will need to warn students to be alert to the exact nature of the sources used and when they have been published.
The learning activity about China asks students to find and assess the effectiveness of websites as a source of information. The following information may be useful in supporting this activity.
Website Features
Students may propose the following elements as possible important features of a useful website:
- accuracy and authority of information presented – sources, dates, names of authors, cross-references
- information type: archival as well as contemporary
- ease of access: well-defined links within the website, capacity for search within the website through a search tool, list of contents
- provision of links to other websites on the internet and descriptions of those websites
- email: capacity for feedback or to ask specific questions of the website managers and other visitors to the site
- presentation: visually appealing, grahics complement text, clear instructions, attractive and suitable use of colour and icon codes, site maps
- time-efficient: downloading time
- mediums integrated: sound or music, interviews, photography, film footage
