Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia - Teacher Information (National Identity)
National ideals and principles and the symbols that nations use to express their national values are explored in the text Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. These student activities build upon and complement the published text. The country-specific focus for the activities is on Korea and Vietnam.
Student activities
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- analyse the Korean national anthem as an expression of national values
- consider the national principles and ideals inherent in the Korean constitution and reunification policy
- investigate, access and critically evaluate a range of websites that deal with Vietnam’s national symbols
- design and develop the framework for a website based on their research into Vietnam
Korean National Anthem
This student activity sheet complements material and activities on Korean national symbols in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The national anthem of Korea is provided on the activity sheet, with a range of questions and activities.
National Symbols and Identity of Korea
This student activity sheet provides an avenue for extension work on some of the national values and ideals of Korea described in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. During these activities, students will reflect on the reunification of North and South Korea and the implications for the symbols with which these regions identify themselves.
Website Investigation and Design: Vietnam – The Nation’s Symbols
This student activity sheet is a structured web-search activity. It is designed to develop students’ proficiency in web research and to help them appreciate the characteristics of a useful website. It builds on Vietnamese teenagers’ selection of symbols to represent Vietnam as a nation in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia (p18).

The learning activity about Vietnam asks students to find and assess the effectiveness of websites as a source of information. The following information may be useful in supporting this activity.
Suitable websites
Flags of the World contains excellent information on and images of the Vietnamese national flag, national emblem and historical flags.
Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the United States of America has information on the national emblem as described in the constitution of Vietnam (article 142) and Vietnam’s national anthem (article 143).
Viet Voice has numerous images of various Ao Dai.
Vietnam documents includes selection of documents in Vietnamese history including the Declaration of Independence and Vietnam’s constitution.
Website Features
Students may propose the following elements as important features of a useful website:
- accuracy and authority of information presented – sources, dates, names of authors, cross-references
- information type: archival as well as contemporary
- ease of access: well-defined links within the website, capacity for search within the website through a search tool, list of contents
- provision of links to other websites on the internet and descriptions of those websites
- email: capacity for feedback or to ask specific questions of the website managers and other visitors to the site
- presentation: visually appealing, grahics complement text, clear instructions, attractive and suitable use of colour and icon codes, site maps
- time-efficient: downloading time
- mediums integrated: sound or music, interviews, photography, film footage
