Teaching and Learning Activities

Family Outing

Students form small groups to list and categorise places of interest suitable for a family outing in Bali, using the following websites:

Suitable categories include: temples, volcanoes, beaches, amusement/fun parks, ecotourism sites, lakes. Students list on wall charts the names of places under each category.

Students label a large wall map of Bali with the names of those places found from the Web search. The class needs to decide on a suitable legend for the map, eg: fun parks=figure, temple=Star, beach=Waves, ecotourism site=Palm tree.

Students might like to give a brief rundown of the places listed to give the rest of the class some idea about what those particular attractions offer.

Five Days in Bali

Using the class-generated wall map of places of interest, students select those places which they would like to include on a day's outing to each of Bali's five regions - see the following website:

They should include two activities or visits for the morning and two activities or visits for the afternoon and ensure there is a balance between child-oriented activities and adult-oriented activities.

Students research more information about their chosen places using the websites listed under 'Family Outing', taking notes as they read and view the information.

Students record their final draft on the Five Days in Bali Activity Sheet enlarged to A3 size. Display the finished posters in the class.

Advertising Bali

Students create a new logo for a poster advertising one of the places they have focused on in their itinerary and create a radio advertisement with a jingle.

Brainstorm with students what makes a good advertising poster and radio advertisement, eg: bright colours, a catchy caption, exciting visuals for the poster, and sound effects, an appealing voice and an easy-to-remember jingle for the radio advertisement.

The website

has good examples of logos and persuasive advertising language for tourist sites on Bali.
