Transport in Australia and Indonesia

Brainstorm with students the forms and uses of transport across Australia. Display these findings on a class poster.

Ask students if they know of any forms of transport used in Indonesia and if yes, ask whether the use is the same as in Australia.

Students form small investigation groups to research one type of transport found in Indonesia. The groups are: becak, bicycle, minibus, bajaj, motorbike, horse-cart, traditional boats, bemo/opelet, train, plane.

Using the following sites, students find descriptions of and sketch the Indonesian form of transport chosen from the above list by their group.

The following sites are for specific forms of transport.

Each group makes a poster about their form of transport including an illustration, a written description, examples of uses and where in Indonesia this form of transport can be found.

An Indonesian Transport Song

'Naik Delman' is a traditional children's song about a trip to town in a horse-cart. Listen to the tune and sing along on the following website (requires Microsoft Internet Explorer to hear the song):

  • 'Naik Delman'
    http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/1823/anak/delman.htm

On Sundays I go with Dad to town
    Travelling in a special horse-cart
I sit in the front beside the driver
Whose job is to guide the horse
    To trot properly
    Trit, trot, trit, trot.

Try singing and playing the song together, using recorders or glockenspiels - rhythm sticks are very good as the horse's hooves.

Here is the tune for 'Naik Delman'.

Note: The unshaded boxes contain the musical notes for the tune.
The shaded segments contain the Indonesian words to the song as found on the website.
