This big book is an excellent way to introduce knowledge and appreciation of the Philippines whilst developing literacy skills in the primary classroom.

Student activities

  1. Postcard
    Read the postcards in the Philippines book sent to Jojo by his friend. Make your own postcard to send to a friend or relative.

  2. Games: Sungka and Patintero
    Sungka and patintero are traditional games of the Philippines. You can learn the rules for patintero by reading the PDF. Sungka is a board game that is a type of mancala game played by many children around the world. Learn how to play sungka by looking at a similar game called congklak in the MSO World website (http://www.msoworld.com/).

  3. Map of the Philippines
    This map can be used for the suggested activities in the Philippines teacher guide, or for locating and labelling towns, cities and other geographic features. It can be copied onto an overhead transparency and projected as an enlarged version to be used in front of the class.

  4. Celebrations Calendar
    Look at the 'Calendar of Holidays and Celebrations' in the Philippines book. Use the blank calendar and create a Celebrations Calendar based around a theme. Topics can be class birthdays or name days, national celebrations and holidays, regional or international celebrations and holidays. Alternatively, compile a list of celebrations and ask students to select a celebration for each month and illustrate it.

  5. Word Lists
    Study the shopping list and wish list on the 'Going Shopping' pages in the Philippines book. Ask the students to search through the book to compile different word lists on the PDF printout, for examples a food list, a goods list, an animal list, a place name list, a cooking terms list, or a list of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, words starting with a particular letter, etc. Then cut out the word entries and sort them in alphabetical order.
