Zoo of Many Flowers
This unit uses Many Flowers, an anthology of diverse folk stories, as a springboard for discussion and further activities. Students are encouraged to become familiar with the stories and respond to them, improving their speaking and listening skills. They will talk about the morals contained in the stories and draw each story’s animals for a classroom collage, which they will then use to retell the story in front of an audience.

Overview
Many flowers: Folk stories from Asia is a collection of folk stories that aims to stimulate awareness of, interest in and knowledge of Asia, and promote empathy towards Asian peoples and cultures. This unit provides opportunities for students to become familiar with the stories and respond to them, increasing their speaking and listening skills. Students listen to the stories and discuss the morals (wise ideas, good advice) they contain, then draw each story's animals for a classroom collage, which they use to retell the story for an audience.
Duration
This unit may be completed intensively in a week, in five one-hour lessons, or over a longer period of time, depending on how many stories are read and how you wish to scale and pace the project of creating the zoo. This unit also offers many opportunities for linking into other areas of study and could easily be expanded into a fully integrated unit.
