Asia Scope and Sequence for English: Professional Learning Workshop
This professional learning program introduces teachers to the Asia Scope and Sequence for English, the accompanying units of work developed for English classrooms and the National Statement. It explores the rationale for a focus on Asia as well as providing time for discussion about useful resources and pedagogies.

Introduction
This professional learning workshop is intended to:
- Support the use of the Asia Scope and Sequence for English (ASSE) resource and the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools (the National Statement)
- Encourage teachers to include a focus on Asia in English and literacy.
Workshop audience
The key audience for the professional learning workshop includes:
- teachers of English at both primary and secondary levels
- English curriculum or policy officers
- English teacher professional association representatives
- school leaders.
It is assumed that workshop participants will come with varying levels of knowledge about the beliefs, traditions, cultures and peoples of different countries in the Asian region. It is also assumed that participants will have varying levels of awareness of the ASSE resource and the National Statement, and varying levels of experience in integrating studies of Asia and Australia in the English classroom.
Workshop aims
The professional learning workshop aims to:
- introduce educators to the National Statement and the ASSE resource – including the units of work
- provide opportunities for educators, whether in policy development, school leadership, or classroom teaching, to reflect on current practice in relation to engaging young Australians with Asia through the English learning area
- assist educators in planning their future practice to introduce or strengthen engagement with Asia using the new resources
- encourage educators to view the National Statement, the ASSE resource and associated units of work as part of a package of interdependent curriculum resources that also includes the national 2005 Statements of Learning for English and their own State/Territory curriculum initiatives
