The River PLP
Developed to support The River storybook, this professional learning program broadens participants' understandings of China, of critical literacies and of the place of intercultural competencies in the English classroom. Activities used in the PLP could also be adapted for use with students of varying age groups.

Introduction
This professional development workshop is intended to:
- introduce teachers to The River
- provide stimulus for use of the picture storybook text within classrooms.
The program places an emphasis on literacy, including the narrative genre and visual and critical literacies.
The workshop develops notions about intercultural inquiry and participants have the opportunity to discuss ways that The River can lead to an in-depth study of China, its peoples and culture.
Workshop audience
The expected audience for this workshop is teachers of middle and upper primary students. The content of The River provides links with a range of learning areas and curriculum focuses that will suit the integrated nature of primary teaching.
Workshop aims
The workshop aims to:
- investigate the visual text and cultural content of The River, using a variety of strategies
- develop participants' abilities to ask critical questions of a text in order to assess its cultural content
- acknowledge and build upon participants' prior knowledge of China
- expand activities for classroom contexts that focus on China, using The River as a stimulus
