Kormilda College in the Northern Territory hosted a visit from their Indonesian partner school SMAN 15 Surabaya (25 students and 3 teachers) in late October 2011 as a part of the BRIDGE Project.

It was a great opportunity for Kormilda College to support the National Statement on Asia Literacy in Australian Schools 2011– 2012, which states that ‘for Australians to be good regional and global citizens we need to understand, learn from, and engage and communicate with our Asian neighbours.’

During their stay, the SMAN 15 Surabaya students were billeted with Kormilda College families, and attended classes each day with the host students. The visit was an overwhelming success, and has furthered the College’s engagement with our partner school both professionally and personally.

Embracing Culture

Kormilda College students involved in the visit had an exceptional opportunity to increase their knowledge and understanding of Indonesia, strengthen their Indonesian language skills, and develop friendships with the visiting Indonesian students.

Likewise with the Indonesian students, who embraced Australian culture and seized every opportunity to improve their English language skills, as well as make new friends.  The students intend to maintain their new friendships as Australia and Indonesia continue to engage and build stronger relationships with each other, and embrace the exciting opportunities emerging in our region.
