ACTIVITIES BASED ON 'THE FAKE EGG' BY KUNIKO MUKODA
Background Information

The student activities are based on the short story 'The Fake Egg' by Kuniko Mukoda.

Kuniko Mukoda was probably best known for her radio and television scripts but also wrote short stories, some of which appeared in a popular monthly magazine in Japan. Her stories often illustrate women's strength and endurance.

In 1981, Kuniko Mukoda was killed in an aeroplane crash in China.

In 'The Fake Egg', Sachiko and Takeo are a young couple who have been unable to have children after some years of marriage. Sachiko is reminded of a waterglass egg (a 'fake egg' to encourage chickens to lay) which she saw as a child. This leads to introspection and a series of events which cause her to re-evaluate her relationship.

'The Fake Egg' is found in:
Kuniko Mukoda 1994, The Name of the Flower, Stone Bridge Press, Berkeley.

The student worksheet complements the handout 'The Fake Egg'. The student worksheet and the Fake Egg story can be printed.
