Asia EdNet

About the project

What is it? | Why this project?

  • Have you ever wanted to use the Internet to locate current, authoritative information about Asia that you can use in your classroom?
  • Have you ever wanted to share ideas on teaching about Asia with other educators all over Australia and the world?
  • Have you ever wanted to find curriculum resources and ideas for activities that you can use to teach about Asia in your classroom?
  • Have you ever wanted to develop collaborative projects related to Asia that link teachers and students at a national and international level?

The Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST), under the National Asian Languages and Studies in Australian Schools (NALSAS) Strategy, has funded Asia EdNet, a national project to support all these needs and more.

TopThe project is being managed jointly by Curriculum Corporation and the Asia Education Foundation.

What is it?

The Asia EdNet project revolves around two major strategies:

  1. The provision of online services which assist participants to network with each other and share ideas and resources related to teaching about Asia.
  2. Interested readers can subscribe to the Asia EdNet discussion group online.
  3. The development of a professional development strategy, including a train-the-trainer workshop, CD-ROM and online tutorial, which assists participants to use the Internet effectively to teach about Asia in their classrooms.
  4. Each education jurisdiction is delivering professional development workshops to educators in their constituencies.

As a result of this project, participating educators should:

  • become familiar with using the Internet to locate and assess information and resources to support teaching about Asia
  • become confident in using the Internet to network with colleagues and students across Australia and the rest of the world
  • Topbecome familiar with using the Internet to develop curriculum resources and collaborative activities related to Asia.

Why this project?

When teaching about Asia and Asian languages, locating contemporary and authoritative resources and networking with other like-minded teachers are important, especially for teachers located outside the capital cities in Australia. The Asia EdNet project recognises that the Internet has enormous potential to assist educators interested in teaching about Asia in schools in this way.

However, the Internet is also a huge, sometimes confusing and ever-changing and growing entity and educators often have limited time and expertise to utilise its features in the most efficient and effective way.

This project therefore aims to:

  • provide electronic facilities to support teaching about Asia
  • develop skills in using online technologies among educators interested in teaching about Asia
  • nurture educators interested in teaching about Asia as an online community.

TopParticipants learn how to make the most out of the resources available on the Internet and have increased opportunities to network with their peers and develop collaborative projects at state, national and international levels.
