Asia EdNet Tutorial - Module 4

Introduction

If you have not done so already, it is important for you
to read the How to use the tutorial section.

In this module, you will learn:

  • how to use appropriate etiquette ('netiquette') in Internet communication;
  • how to communicate effectively in a cross-cultural environment;
  • how to subscribe to and use mailing lists, newsgroups and web forums;
  • about synchronous forms of communication, such as online chat and video conferencing.

This module focuses on ways in which teachers can network and communicate with other teachers and interested professionals, both in Australia and internationally. These methods are the same as those which can be used by students. An understanding of their use is essential before teachers can supervise the kinds of collaborative projects investigated in Module 5.

The Internet should be used for communication when it is the best available method for your purpose. It can be 'better' than other methods because it may be quicker or because it can link groups of people more easily. But for other purposes it may not be the best method. Sometimes, for instance, a simple phone call is more effective than an email. You might like to keep these ideas in mind as you go through this module.

Module 4 consists of the following sections:

Netiquette

Issues about communication with schools in Asia

Mailing lists

Other forms of communication
