Asia EdNet Tutorial - Module 4

Netiquette

Before beginning a discussion of various methods of communication via the Internet, it is important to look at two related topics: 'netiquette' and communication with schools in Asia. 'Netiquette' is etiquette as it applies to the Internet and will be discussed below. Issues about communication with schools in Asia will be discussed in the next section.

Even if you are not sure how you might use Internet communications at this stage, it is still worth having a general introduction to netiquette. If you are concerned about a particular point later in the module, you can always return to this section.

Task 1 - Netiquette guide

There are many views about the forms and conventions of netiquette but one of the most respected general writers is Virginia Shea. Read her Core rules of netiquette (http://www.albion.com/netiquette/corerules.html).

Use Shea's article as the basis for creating some catchy slogans which could be used on a poster which could go on your classroom wall and guide students about netiquette. Add any local issues which might be important.

An online version of Shea's book, Netiquette, is available. It provides much more detail than you need at this stage but you might want to use it for reference later. For the moment, you could just look through its table of contents (http://www.albion.com/netiquette/book/index.html).

Help One of Shea's rules concerns privacy, which is a big issue for many people communicating via the Internet. You could investigate the issue by following one or more of these links.
