2010 Call for a National Action Plan

Formal endorsement of a renewed Call for a National Action Plan for Asia Literacy in Schools (PDF: 540kb) is being sought from all peak education, business and community organisations. A National Action for Asia Literacy in Schools was a key recommendation of the AEF National Summit in March 2010. Evidence presented to the Summit suggested that, while real progress has been made in the past two decades, the rate of progress is slowing and in some cases reversing – particularly with regard to Asian languages education in Australian schools.
In December 2008 all Education Ministers agreed on the need for Australians to be ‘Asia literate’ in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. Read who signed up to the Call for a National Action Plan in 2010.
National Asia Literacy Network Meeting 2010
The AEF recently welcomed managers with responsibility for Asian languages and studies in education systems across Australia for the inaugural meeting of the National Asia Literacy Network (NALN). It took place at the University of Melbourne on 18 and 19 October 2010.
Comprising leading officials from government, Catholic and independent systems, the NALN aims to increase knowledge and understanding of Asia literacy strategies occurring nationally, share key research and opportunities, and exchange and leverage synergies with the AEF’s services and the systems across Australia.
Outcomes
One of the 10 strategies demanded that school leadership initiatives be expanded. The Leading 21st Century Schools project has recently been extended to include a new cohort of principals. Find out more about how school leaders have responded to this project.
