Ross first became interested in Asia when in 1967 he was conscripted into the Australian Army and served in South Vietnam. After taking up Chinese language study when he returned to Australia, Ross then joined the Department of Foreign Affairs and was sent to Hong Kong for two years full time study of Chinese. Following a memorable posting at the Australian Embassy in 1976, he has held various senior government roles, managed the Austrade offices in Taiwan and worked as a partner in several consulting companies dealing with Asia. Currently a proprietor of a company importing packaging from Taiwan, Ross is also the Chairman of the Australia Taiwan Business Council.
