cover image: Culture/SOSE Unit: Voices and Visions Australia/Asia

This unit looks at cultural identity, particularly as it's seen through the eyes of young people. Students will explore issues of social cohesion and diversity and the effects of ever-increasing globalisation. They will develop a cultural identity hypothesis, backed up by facts they collect along the way, and present their findings in a multimedia presentation to the rest of the class.

Elaborations

Students learn to recognise how the cultural beliefs and traditions of people in Australia and Asia change over time. They:

  • explore how globalisation of culture has impacted on young people in Asia and Australia (e.g. punk rock in Japan, manga cartoons in Australia).
  • investigate and celebrate Australia's changing rich, cultural heritages and explore contemporary discussions about Australia's identity and future (e.g. values reflected in national celebrations and commemorations, what these represent to the diverse peoples and groups and how they have changed over time).

Text/Resources

Accessing the Learning Federation materials:

The Learning Federation provides teachers with online learning objects. Teachers will need to contact their State/Territory representative to register and gain access to these objects. The process for accessing learning objects is further explained on The Learning Federation's website, www.thelearningfederation.edu.au.

Focus Questions

What is meant by the term 'cultural identity' and are there particular factors that influence identity? What then, does it mean to be Australian, to be Japanese, or to be Indian, for example? Is globalisation creating a universal identity and, in the process, homogenising culture?
