Talking Heads is an innovative cross-curriculum project, which provides students with a unique opportunity to communicate:
- across distance to children in other countries
- across generations with their parents and grandparents
- across cultures to other worlds of meaning and experience
Talking Heads provides students with a template for an activity that combines Arts objectives with English, Society and Environment and History. Talking Heads would also be an exciting activity for the LOTE classroom.
Students are invited to create a visual portrait of an older person - a parent, grandparent or friend - and to record that person's memories of key events and milestones in their life. The visual element and the results of the interview combine to present an image of a life's experience. When a number of Talking Heads portraits are collected, they constitute a fascinating gallery of imagery and social history, providing wonderful opportunities for learning and discussion activities.
Teachers could use this site as a model for a classroom activity. Specific themes could be explored or it could be used to augment existing sister-school, pen-pal or exchange programs. These activities can help students to discover other cultures and ways of seeing the world.
