Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia and the SOSE/HSIE Curriculum

Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia can be used in a number of ways. It can be used to integrate the studies of Asia into SOSE/HSIE within theme-based units. It can be used as a means to integrate an Asian perspective into civics and citizenship education, or, alternatively, as a resource to complement country-specific studies of Asia with a citizenship and civics perspective.

Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia provides opportunities to achieve a range of learning outcomes at Level 5 as specified in Studies of society and environment--A curriculum profile for Australian schools.

Why integrate studies of Asia into civics and citizenship education?

An integration of the studies of Asia into the study of civics and citizenship provides an ideal opportunity to enrich students' understandings of what it means to different people to be a member of a society.

By including the studies of Asia within civics education:

  • Students can explore notions of social and political diversity, cross-cultural attitudes, issues and concerns of people as well as systems and processes to resolve difference and respond to change within a relevant context--their own geo-political region.

  • Students' concepts of cooperation, participation, community involvement and the relationship between rights and responsibilities can be greatly enhanced by the study of principles and practices of good citizenship in countries across Asia.

  • While exploring ideas and practices of citizenship, the understanding of Asian perspectives can break stereotypes that exist in Australia about how people from Asian countries think and behave.

  • Students can study the impact of the interplay between tradition and change on values and concepts of citizenship, family and community among our regional neighbours and within Australia.

  • Solutions and processes for resolving dilemmas can be sought for Australia through examining the processes and practices of our neighbours in the face of fundamental changes and social crises, such as environmental degradation, rural to urban movement, inadequate welfare systems, population concerns and changing family structures.

  • Students can develop the capacity for acceptance and tolerance of cultural difference, and develop attitudes that actually embrace and enjoy difference among people.
