TEACHER INFORMATION
National ideals and principles and the symbols that nations use to express
their national values are explored on pp 16-19 of Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The student activities provided on the three activity sheets on this website build upon and complement the published text. The country-specific focus for the activities is on Korea and Vietnam. The student activity sheets are designed to be printed for immediate classroom use.
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- examine, analyse and compare the Korean national anthem as an expression of national values
- consider the national principles and ideals inherent in the Korean constitution and reunification policy
- investigate, access and critically evaluate a range of websites about Vietnam's national symbols
- design and develop the framework for a website on the basis of their research on Vietnam.

Korean National Anthem
This student activity sheet complements material and activities presented on national symbols of Korea described in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. The national anthem of Korea is provided on the activity sheet, with a range of questions and activities.

National Symbols and Identity of Korea
This student activity sheet provides an avenue for extension work on some of the national values and ideals of Korea described in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia. Students visit two websites to investigate national holidays and the Korean constitution.
Through the activities students also reflect upon the issue of reunification of North and South Korea and the implications for the symbols with which they identify themselves.
Website Investigation and Design: Vietnam--The Nation's Symbols
This student activity sheet is a structured web search activity. It is designed to develop students' proficiency in web research and to develop an appreciation of the characteristics of a useful website.
The activity builds on Vietnamese teenagers' selection of symbols to represent Vietnam as a nation in Voices & Values: Citizenship in Asia (p 18).
In the web search activity students investigate the official national symbols of Vietnam and simultaneously evaluate the features of each website they visit.
The student activity sheet culminates in students designing the framework for a website entitled 'Vietnam: The Nation's Symbols', which uses their research and incorporates the most appropriate website features.

- Divide the class into groups or teams to perform web searches, collect and collate relevant information.
- Encourage small group discussions and subsequent class discussion about the useful features of websites.
- Groups or teams design and develop their website framework and present it to the class, either in print form or as overhead transparencies, for appraisal.
