Summary of Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia

Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia explores notions of what it means to be a citizen in the Asia region, with thematic and country-specific sections. Designed as a multi-purpose, complementary text, it is source-based to encourage an enquiry approach by students. Students are engaged by the dynamic and interesting voices of young people in the Asia region. It is through these young people's voices that students in Australia are exposed to diverse perspectives--their ideas, opinions and the civic issues they consider important. The book contains six sections:

1 Citizens Count!

  • Explores differing notions of citizenship, with examples from Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Philippines.
  • Presents ideas of cooperation and responsibility, with examples from Cambodia, Bangladesh, Burma and Korea.
  • Presents surveys about social concerns across some of the major cities of Asia.
  • Debates whether or not Asian values exist.
  • Uses examples of collective actions by citizens from India, Indonesia, Singapore and Japan.

2 Caring for the Earth

  • Presents environmental problems and issues that face the Asia region.
  • Explores young peoples' concerns and responses to environmental issues, with examples from India, Philippines and Thailand.
