Leading 21st Century Schools: Engage with Asia project
Prime Minister Rudd wants "Australia to become the most Asia-literate country in the Western world".
'It is impossible to conceive of a future Australian education system that does not take the study of Asia seriously’' said the Hon Julia Gillard MP, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Education. She charged the nation’s peak educators with the imperative of creating a nation-wide student body of global citizens, literate in the cultures and languages of Asia.
Leading primary and secondary principals around Australia have taken up this challenge. They are building their schools' capacities to ensure their students are Asia literate.
An action research based program is in process in schools to embed studies of Asia across the areas the curriculum, particularly in the areas of English, Studies of Society and Environment (SOSE) and The Arts. Principals are being equipped with resources and professional learning to support this important work.
The Leading 21st Century Schools: Engage with Asia project is a national initiative of the Asia Education Foundation working in partnership with the peak principal associations of Australia and all state and territory education jurisdictions.

The project is funded by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations as a quality teacher initiative under the Australian Government Quality Teacher Programme, through the Asia Education Foundation, under the Grants and Awards Programme and the Quality Outcomes Programme.
