Online Programmes

Online professional learning programs have been developed to provide flexible, self-paced options for teachers to develop knowledge in the area.

Asia EdNet Tutorial

Asia EdNet includes an online tutorial that assists teachers to integrate the use of electronic resources in curriculum programs and promotes the use of multimedia in classrooms. The tutorial modules include:

  • What's out there and how do you find it?
  • But is it any good? Evaluating Internet sources
  • Studies of Asia curriculum and the Internet
  • Keeping in touch – Using the Internet for communication
  • Working together – Collaborative projects using the Internet

Voices & Visions Tutorial

The Voices & Visions tutorial introduces teachers to texts from Asia. The tutorial includes:

  • Using CD-ROMs in the classroom
  • Getting to know Voices & Visions texts
  • Voices & Visions and the curriculum

APEC Strengthening Our Community: Building a Sustainable Future

This professional learning program supports the student resource APEC: Strengthening Our Community, Building a Sustainable Future. Five modules have been developed to accommodate a range of professional learning settings. The modules prepared for this professional learning program are designed to stand alone or come together depending on audience needs.

It makes links between these documents and State and Territory English curriculums. The workshop demonstrates how the two documents and linked resources can be used and adapted to support current practice in English classrooms, or to plan for change.

Asian Languages Professional Learning Programme

This professional learning programme supports the teaching of Asian languages in primary and secondary schools by focusing on language methodology, particularly intercultural language learning, and links across the curriculum.

Australia Kaleidoscope

This professional learning programme is designed for teachers in the primary and middle years. It explores the contributions of peoples and cultures of Asia to the past, present and future of Australia through the Australia Kaleidoscope curriculum resource.

Change is a journey, not a blueprint

This professional learning programme has been developed to support teachers and schools looking for ways to introduce, sustain or expand studies of Asia in the curriculum. The programme is based around the teacher resource Change is a journey, not a blueprint.

Developing Intercultural Understanding

This train-the-trainer programme provides primary and secondary teachers with common approaches for teaching about culture across a number of learning areas.

Go Korea!

The Go Korea! train-the-trainer professional learning programme aims to introduce teachers to the Go Korea! website, to extend their knowledge of contemporary Korea and give them confidence to teach about Korea. It explores links between the website, local curriculum priorities and national education initiatives such as civics and citizenship and values education.

Hanabi, Sources from Japan for the Secondary English Classroom

This programme assists secondary English teachers to teach about contemporary Japanese culture, particularly popular literature, through use of the Hanabi, Sources from Japan for the Secondary English Classroom curriculum resource.

Including Studies of Asia in the Curriculum

This short course is designed for primary and secondary teachers wanting to develop curriculum inclusive of knowledge, concepts and understandings of the countries of Asia. Further information about this programme is available from your local Studies of Asia Advisor.

Linking Languages in the Primary Classroom

This train-the-trainer program is available to support the use of the Teaching Languages in the Primary School - Examples from current practice resource, which has been developed as a practical resource for teachers, school leaders and curriculum advisers working in and with Australian primary schools. It aims to stimulate professional reflection by providing examples and practical ideas drawn from current practice to address issues that affect primary languages programs in primary schools. The programme can be downloaded as a PDF or Word document.

The Really Big Beliefs Project

This train-the-trainer programme for primary and middle years teachers explores a range of religions and beliefs practised by Australians and the impact of these beliefs on daily life.

Regional and Global Issues

This train-the-trainer programme is developed for secondary teachers and explores key regional and global issues such as sustainability, regional cooperation, youth culture and the movement of people, goods and ideas across borders.

Teacher and School Resource - A guide to implementing the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools
This professional learning workshop aims to raise awareness about, and support implementation, of the National Statement for Engaging Young Australians with Asia in Australian Schools and the associated Teacher and School Resource.

The target audience for the workshops is members of the school leadership team (Principals/Heads of School and their deputies and curriculum and professional learning coordinators) and teachers seeking to gain support for school-wide planning and implementation of teaching units/courses consistent with achieving the student outcomes described in the National Statement.

This train-the-trainer programme increases secondary SOSE/HSIE teachers' knowledge of key civics and citizenship contexts in Asia through use of the Voices and Values: Citizenship in Asia curriculum resources.

Postgraduate courses

Studies of Asia Professional Development Modules have been developed as a framework for universities and education systems to develop and deliver postgraduate courses on Asia to primary and secondary teachers.
