Asia Capable Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum

The Australian Curriculum recognises the importance of Asia capability for Australian students in the 21st century. This means developing an understanding of the possibilities offered for learning and teaching through the Asia and Australia’s engagement with Asia cross-curriculum priority and the Intercultural understanding general capability.

The Australian Curriculum has a three-dimensional design – discipline-based learning areas, contemporary cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities as essential 21st century skills.

  • Asia content is represented in the content descriptions and elaborations of learning areas/subjects.
  • Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia is one of three cross-curriculum priorities.
  • Intercultural understanding is one of seven general capabilities.

Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia

The general capabilities and the cross-curriculum priorities are not added as additional subjects. They are dealt with, where relevant, through the learning area content.

Organising ideas

The Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) defines a set of organising ideas for each cross-curriculum priority. These are embedded in the content descriptions and elaborations of learning areas/subjects.
