The Commonwealth of Australia, geographically speaking, consists of a vast mainland continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous other small islands. It is the world’s sixth-largest country by total land area, with a total area of 7.69 million kilometres. Its immediate neighbours include East Timor, Indonesia and New Zealand. For at least 40,000 years prior to British settlement in the late 18th Century, the continent was inhabited by an indigenous population. Australia generates a vast amount of wealth from mining-related exports, telecommunications, banking, and farming.

The most common spoken language in Australia is English; however many other languages are spoken in the country due to the high number of international residents and visitors that Australia attracts. Most Australians are immigrants or descendants of immigrants who arrived over the last 200 years.
